15th June 2018

And the last day has also arrived.
When you have to wait for someone, time never passes but when you have time to do, time flies and these 15 days have flown by!
This morning with Kamanga we return to Nsanama to inaugurate the well excavated on Wednesday. Agostino instead stays in Balaka to do some work on the mill.
Appointment with the same guy who made us wait 9 hours the other day but today I was pretty sure it would not be late, it had to be paid. And in fact it is he who calls us to see if we are coming 🙂
The village welcomes us with a welcome poster prepared yesterday, fantastic! There are not many people because today is a holiday, the end of Ramadan, and in this village many are Muslims and they are celebrating.
But the welcome is as warm as ever. This village of over 60 families really needed a well. After the songs and the speeches of thanks it is time to go. But first I have to pay the guy. I begin a long and friendly discussion to make him understand that if he takes an appointment he must respect him, that he must understand that things must be done with attention and mutual respect. And in the end I tell him that I will pay him something less for what he had done. “It’s a punishment?” “Yes, sir” “Ok, I understand”. Anyway, we shake hands friendly. For me it was little more than a game and, perhaps, a little lesson in behavior. The money saved went to Sister Giusy who will know how to best spend it on the community.
We say goodbye and head to Kankao to greet Sister Santa and the disabled children of the orphanage and to bring her all the medicines that I have collected in Italy. This time I am the driver and Kamanga fully enjoy the rough roads of Malawi.
And so it ended again this year with a wonderful result: 6 wells built, 10 villages that will be able to use them and thousands of people who can now drink clean water. Difficult to count them, but I estimate 3-4,000 people.
Which brings the result of this project to a total of 17 wells built for around 9,000 people. A heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of people who believed in it and have helped me and have continued to help me since 2015. Without them NOTHING would have been possible.
And another thanks to Agostino and Kamanga, irreplaceable friends here in Malawi.
Now I enjoy the last sunset watching the children play football on the dusty field of Balaka.
And I can only think of one sentence to conclude:
THE WELL OF DESIRES, 6 (you are) BEAUTIFUL!
