Last days. Even if they are full of things to do, they are always the most melancholy because the countdown has started.
This morning, that light coolness that is always there at dawn has disappeared and already at the arrival of Kamanga at 7 it was fine in a shirt. A couple of shopping at the market, we collect Madolo, our well assembler, on the street and go to the village of Dulani where they were waiting for us to complete the well drilled the other day. Madolo and I now work in sync: pump, rope, pipes, glue, clamp and go. In less than two hours everything is in place and assembled. And clean, fresh water running down.
Well that we inaugurated immediately after lunch. The village was waiting for us, the beautiful well dressed up and the women who kept on singing.
And even today the theater! Mother and daughter arguing over who was going to fetch water from the river until our well comes! The showers are obviously not lacking. The village chief and his deputy were completely soaked  🙂
Then the speeches, always solemn and in absolute silence, interrupted only by some bleating of a sheep.
In particular, today I am struck by that of the oldest lady in the village who stands up and says: “I thank you for this well, but I am not doing it for myself because I will soon be at the cemetery. I do it for them, because they will have a simpler life. ” Pointing to the little girls sitting on the ground who looked at her with respect. Exemplary.
Among the gifts received, a goat arrives for the first time! We made the return journey together in the pick-up truck and he never stopped bleating!
A well dedicated to my uncle Gino, who recently passed away, who was always curious to hear my stories about Malawi every time I went to visit him at home. He had traveled the world so much, but never down here and at the end of our speeches he always said to me: “If my body would allow me I would go to Malawi with you”. Hi uncle, somehow you got this far.
