What a busy day around the villages!
Today we had to finish building the last two wells that we dug earlier this week and we did it.
In the morning in the first village everything goes the right way, including showers, as seen from the video! The village chief, the most institutional figure, had to submit to the “punishment” and be laughed at by all his friends. After the party, however, another shower arrives. This time cold. Water from the well does not come out more. The well has some problems, probably the aquifer we have found is not enough or it cannot channel well into the pipes. After about 10 full buckets you have to wait a long time before being able to pull them up again. So it’s not good, it’s not normal. In the coming days we will have to do further tests to understand whether the situation is going well or not. It would be a pity if the well were to work halfway. Maybe we should have dug a little deeper, at least another 6-8 meters. The Indian will have to remedy the thing if this is so.
After a quick lunch in Balaka, we run to the second well where I discover with surprise and joy that the villagers have dedicated it to me, engraving my name on the concrete base (in fact they wrote Mateyu, but it’s okay). The works went on until sunset and here the water was plentiful and abundant. While we worked with the laying of the poles, the children were particularly agitated and joyful (much more than usual) and I could not understand why. So I went over and found that they were getting dinner, having found some lair of some mice. And one by one they took them with an ever growing excitement. And they made me big joke: while I was taking a photo I hadn’t noticed that a happy child wanted to show me how good he had been at catching one and waving it to me two centimeters from my nose. I jumped and yelled and obviously the whole village didn’t stop laughing for a good 10 minutes! Ah these whites who can’t stay in the world. Here in Malawi mice are eaten. As a good vegetarian, however, I don’t risk finding it on the plate 🙂
Tomorrow is a day of great celebration, both in the morning and in the afternoon we have the inauguration of two wells in two villages. I look forward to. Goodnight Malawi.
